Impact on the Organization
Since leaders are typically accountable for the performance of their team, team leadership is a critical still. As with other skills, leaders must practice their “team leadership” skills, including clarifying expectations, solidifying procedures, fostering communication and good problem solving, and strengthen relationships and build moral that enables the team to be highly successful.
Learning Goals
- Consolidate key leadership skills and apply them in leading a team.
- Apply these skills in leading a team.
- Practice assessing and improving a team’s performance.
- Increase awareness of their leadership and the impact on the team’s work.
Team Leadership builds on the foundation skills of communication, flexible leadership, building relationships, coaching, managing change, etc. as well as the concepts and skills in the Building Successful Teams program. This program helps participants consolidate these skills and apply them to teams in the workplace, culminating in a presentation to peers and management. The participants are challenged to assess a team’s performance (possibly a cross-functional team), looking closely at all facets of effective teamwork, identify an area where team performance can be improved, and by working with individual team members and the intact team, implement a performance improvement plan and assess the results. A big focus of this effort is to capture the individual and collective talents of the team members and empower the team at the appropriate level for each assignment.
